Visit to Jaslyn Cakes

Hello fellow Globe Munchers!
Apologies for the late post - I meant to post this yesterday but I was out for a team dinner with the Evening Edition (at a pretty fancy place with Malaysian style fine dining, which I will be writing about, so do look out for that!) last night so it got delayed!
Today I am going to write about a visit I had recently to Jaslyn Cakes in Jalan Telawi 2, Bangsar! I had heard good things about this place, but it wasn't one of those places that I was DYING to try, although I do regret not coming here earlier and you will see why!
Justin, Li-Yang and I had come here, quite accidentally, for dessert after lunch at Bangsar Village, and since they weren't feeling ice cream (what losers, Inside Scoop is so boss), we were deciding between Dip and Dip and Jaslyn Cakes (Alexis felt a bit over the top for just dessert, soz Alexis, we love you still). Since Justin and I have had Dip and Dip before we decided to go with Jaslyn Cakes after reading good reviews.

The HEAVEN that awaits you as soon as you walk in the door.
It's quite a small shop, but it fortunately wasn't too busy, probably because it was a weekday. The first thing you see when you walk in is their beautiful array of cakes and brownies and loaves and cookies etc, which you order at the counter.
Needless to say, deciding what to get was THE HARDEST THING EVER. #exaggeration #firstworldproblems
Justin had seen online that the Salted Valonqar, I mean (thumbs up if you can't wait for GOT Season 7 either), Valrhona Brownie was good, so that's what he went for, and I, after a million years, decided on the vanilla bean cheesecake that was recommended by the staff, and a Long Black. Li-Yang couldn't understand how we had space for dessert so he only got a coffee, but he forgot that he had two bowls of rice at lunch while Justin and I didn't, which we reminded him about.

Vanilla Bean Cheesecake and Salted Valrhona Brownie
The two desserts we had were really, really good shouts, both of them were absolutely delightful. The brownie was probably the fudgiest brownie I have ever had, which means it was quite rich (I suspect that that's the valrhona chocolate) and I highly recommend it with some black coffee, which is what I had it with. The outside was crunchy but the inside melted in your mouth, and the salt balanced the richness of the valrhona chocolate perfectly.
If you are ever having a bad, bad day and need a treat, grab yourself a cup of coffee and a Jaslyn Cake's Salted Valrhona Brownie because man, that stuff is top comfort food.
I was told by the staff that the Vanilla Bean Cheesecake would also be a melt-in-your-mouth type of thing, and man, she was so right. It is a baked cheesecake, but it wasn't dense like your ordinary New York Cheesecake or whatever, instead, it had the lightness of the Japanese cotton cheesecake. The whole while I was eating it I was thinking, how is this physically possible???? I have never had a baked cheesecake that is not a cotton cheesecake this light.
But light and baked it was, and such is the magic of Jaslyn Cakes' vanilla bean cheesecake.
I have to say, maybe because it said "vanilla bean", I had expected the vanilla taste to be a lot stronger. Not to say you can't taste vanilla at all, but it was milder than I expected because.. it said vanilla bean innit. Then again, vanilla bean is expensive I suppose.
Price wise, I have to say it was pretty standard. The Long Black cost RM9, which is the same as a tall Americano in Starbucks, but the brownie and cheesecake cost RM12 and RM15 respectively. RM15 is quite a lot to pay for a slice of cake I guess, but considering the ingredients used (I mean, vanilla bean AND valrhona chocolate), it was alright. The website also boasts the use of organic and natural ingredients in their cakes, which might be more expensive to source too. Not to mention the location of their cafe in freaking Bangsar aka swanky downtown Kuala Lumpur.
I got to meet the boss lady, Jaslyn (the Jaslyn of Jaslyn Cakes, obviously), but I didn't get to have a proper chat about her business and her food, even though Justin encouraged me to, because well, I didn't really know what to ask really. I will probably return one day for ~research purposes~ (and the blondies, which looked really, really good).

The shop sells some other pretty cool stuff alongside cakes as well, like birthday cards and tea and packets of cookies.

Staff hard at work at the open-plan kitchen - really cool to see how everything is done! Jaslyn would be helping out in the kitchen herself from time to time, though she's not pictured here.

"Mmm, cheesecake."
